URGENT MESSAGE TO ALL FILM/TOY CAMERA LOVERS!

Due to the slow response from the Obama Administration, and while Standard & Poor's downgraded U.S. credit rating from AAA to AA, investors are losing trust in U.S. government's ability to pay their bills and the global stock markets have been rocking hard for the past week. At the same time, France, Italy, Spain and Belgium have introduced a ban on short selling for 15 days on bank shares in response to sharp share price falls this week.

This controversial practice is causing confusion to the investors while the U.S. and U.K. refused to follow suit. TFA suspects that due to the uncertainty in the global market today, Kodak and FujiFilm has announced that they will enforce a price hike of 15% on all of their films!!!!!!

Nah just joking, it wasn't because of the market =) but it is true that films are now at least 15% more expensive. This bad news has hit all of us hard, we know that and we really do.. Silver price is soaring up into the sky and hence the production cost of films increased, all of us will have to bear the rising cost.

TFA will try our best to dampen the impact on our wonderful supporters, and at the same time, we will sell off all our films at the current price while stock last!! =) We promise no price hike at least until the new batch comes in because we love all of you!!

Actionsampler

Let's get in for some ACTION!!!

ActionSampler is a very interesting camera by Lomography. It has four lenses instead of one, so it feels like there are four eyes are staring at you.
Q: So how does it work?
A: The total exposure takes 1 second, with each lens being open for 0.25seconds.

Q: What is the result?
A: Four photos in one frame! (:

Q: So can I take during the night time?
A: Daytime is best recommended. However, the ActionSampler Flash model has flash, so sure! You can take your photos at night with this model.

Q: What film ISO is recommended?
A: ISO 400 is recommended for bright daylight. ISO 800 to 1600 will be good for shade or evening shots.

Q: My photos are blurred...
A: It is normal!!! In fact, ActionSampler is intended for this purpose!

Q: What are the available colours?
A: Clear, White and Chrome.

As mentioned in the Necono Cat Shaped digital camera post, Superheadz is very well known for many unique designs cameras and photography related products. Today, we will introduce you to a new released product - CLAP!

I first saw it in Japan. I went to Necono Shop by Lisa Larson, and saw these colourful cute small thumbdrive-lookalike camera! The shop assisstant said that it is a new released product. There were 6 colours on the shelf - black, white, pink, red, orange, blue.

(There is no green!) It looks like a thumbdrive, not like a camera at all. Indeed it has a built-in USB terminal, which is exactly like a thumbdrive.

I am curious about the name CLAP though. On its website, it says "CLAP YOUR HANDS. Take a photo like you applause for being touched from the beauty of sceneries."

La Sardina & Flash

Ok Lomography has a new camera that just hit the shelves in Singapore about 1-2 weeks ago! It sounds latin to me, La Sardina but its not Sardine! It's a camera haha!

And in TFA's point of view, this camera is absolutely attractive! It has a different kind of design as compared to SuperHeadz cameras, and do not underestimate this camera, it is a power pack.

It is a ultra wide angle camera, with multiple exposure and loaded with the most powerful flash Lomography has ever made! The huge flash over there is way way way more powerful than the Diana flash, it has three distance settings, which allow you to have maximum control over your flash photography.

This is an ideal camera for people who just can't take a photo without proper flash, I'll consider this one of the best upgrade from Lomography so far ((:

Holga 120 WPC

Yes its another Holga day today =)) today we are introducing you a rare camera in Singapore, it is not common to see it at all despite it's wonderful features!

The Holga 120WPC, again is a pinhole camera, but this time has a wide lense. The negative this camera produces is an astounding 6×12 (opposed to the normal 6×6 of a holga 120N)! This camera has a cable-release thread for attaching a shutter release cable (sometimes included, other times not). The cable release screw also acts as a shutter release button when pressed, allowing you to take shorter exposures. Also contains a useful exposure guide on the back, and a few small nobbles on top of the camera to line your shot up, plus a spirit level to make sure it’s level.

if you are looking to take a night shot of marina bay sands, this is definitely an ideal camera, it's potential is way greater than any DSLR out there because it uses 120 film!!

Though this camera is rare, it is also pricey, if you are looking for a cheaper alternatives for scenery photos, please take a look at our Recesky Pinhole, it does EXACTLY the same thing and MORE!!!!!!!!

Fisheye No. 2

I received my Fisheye No.2 from my brother on my 22nd birthday. I was soooooo happy and shocked, as I know it is not very cheap and he was only working part time at Kinokuniya while waiting to be enlisted.
(He admitted that he bought it, so that he can use also. He secretly wants it for a long time! haha!)

Fisheye No.2 has a view finder, but Fisheye No.1 doesn't have. The viewfinder is what makes Fisheye No.2 so "fishy", I think. *laughs*

I spent hours reading the manual which comes with the package, and trying on different styles of capturing special shots using Fisheye No.2. Fisheye No.2 has really cool features! For example, if you select "B" mode, the hotshoe flash will fire when you first depress the button (first curtain), and when you release the button, the internal flash will fire (second curtain). With the hotshoe flash firing first and the internal flash firing second, I can capture the movement and moodswings between these two points in time! An example of photo using this feature of Fisheye No.2:

Who says by getting a Fisheye lens for Holga or your SLR or DSLR is the same as getting a Fisheye?! I beg to differ. Fisheye camera has its unique features and hance able to attain certain photo effects. If you mount a Fisheye lens on Holga, but Holga doesn't have an internal flash, you won't be able to achieve such photo effects.

So, be fishy! Get a Fisheye now! =)) *bloop bloop*

Developing films

The Film Age believe in the value of developing the photos and keep it in a physical photo album =) that would retain the purpose of photography: keeping the memory and values of every shoots. The moment our photos are digitized, it will become just part of our infinite data storage and we will hardly ever look at it again because we will keep shooting more and more photos. But what are the values if there are too many of them and you hardly appreciate the value of your shoots? Photography is both a form of art and memory, so developing the photos is important in Lomography and important to The Film Age too.

Camp OutReach '11 - TuYen Lam, Dalat, Vietnam

Rommel is back from the wonderful trip to Dalat with our beloved HI friends, the climate was perfect and I managed to take some cool photos with my Golden Half and Digi Lomo. I had the most portable cameras in the whole group and I am proud to bring two extremely small cameras with great features =))

Do you guys see the lone tree on top of the mountain? It looked as if there is an aura surrounding the tree and only the tree is clear in the clouds. I had no preview for the photos I took and I'm really glad that it all turned out well =))

Golden Half

MUST TAKE A PHOTO OF GOLDEN HALF!

I was first attracted by its small appearance and the variety of designs. Then, I was very attracted by its unique feature - take 72 half frame shots with a roll of 36 exposures film. I thought to myself: "Wah, so worth it. haha." (Ok, i know im super aunty.)

Then, the more I read about Goldne Half, the more I am interested in getting one for myself. Although it cannot do multi-exposures (which is my favourite), but I don't mind getting a point-and-shoot toy camera for a change. I read up on reviews of Golden Half, and comparison reviews of Golden Half and Diana Mini. In the end, I decided to go ahead for a Golden Half! Not because Diana Mini is not good... but I read reviews that it is difficult to turn the exposure settings which is in front of the lens. Given the fat fingers of mine, I know for sure I have difficulties in trying to turn the settings knob. And I am right! I borrowed Diana Mini from Weiling, and I had so much difficulties in turning the settings knob. It was stuck whenever I tried to turn.

Also, I was secretly attracted to the Green Trees version of Golden Half.

There was once, I brought Golden Half to a pasar malam (night market) to shoot, with the BIG flash unit which I mounted on top, it was attracting a lot of stares. There was this uncle who walked past me, and commented, "So cute, it is a camera? Can take photo meh?" Haha. I nodded my head, and felt very proud of my Golden Half. *nose in the air* haha!

One problem I have with Golden Half is, I ALWAYS FORGET TO REMOVE THE LENS CAP! and I ended up with black shots. -.-

I love Golden Half! It's so small and cute and portable and easy to use. Come on guys, why hesitate? Get yourself a half frame camera today!

Polaroid Instax cameras, from Fujifilm, is very popular among many people. There are two formats of instax film and camera - the original "wide" format which gives the 60mm x 99mm image, and the "mini" format which gives the 62mm x 46mm image.

In February 2008, Polaroid announced that it stopped production of film. The release of this news caused much upset and disappointment in many people. Fujifilm became the nly supplier of instant films. In October 2009, Polaroid announced that it will bring back its classic instant film cameras.

Superheadz Ultra Wide & Slim (UWS)

Aren't you attracted to the cuteness and elegance of these UWS? They are soooooo prettttttyyyy! When my niece ordered Usagi Flower, and it arrived at my doorsteps, my heart melted! This toy is soooooo cute and pretty! I love the packaging as well.
It is a very easy camera to use, just point and shoot. It can achieve very cool vignetting images too! It is a wide angle lens camera and hence able to take wide shots. My brother used his White Slim Angel to shoot the National Stadium at Kallang. Uhhooooo! It's so nice. He managed to capture the entire stadium with his UWS.
It is very light, and you can carry it to wherever you go!!!

Holga 135BC

What does the BC stand for? Some websites say "Black Corners", some say "Bent Corners". No matter isit "black" or "bent", it means the same thing - 135BC has some vignetting effect which a standard 135 doesn't have.

Holga135BC uses 35mm films which we see in those Kodak shops or photo stores. Also, loading film into 135BC is much easier than that into 120N. Since there are 36 exposures in a roll of 35mm film, Holga135 users can have the luxury of taking more shots than those of Holga120N which only allows 12 exposures. In summary, the advantages in using Holga135BC are:

1. You still get to have the vignetting effects which a standard Holga120N has.
2. 35mm films are everywhere, so it is convenient to buy and develop photos.
3. Loading film into the camera is easy.
4. You get to take 36 exposures. More shots, more fun!

Recesky Pinhole Camera #2

So now we all know the awesomeness of this camera, and we are going to assemble it together and start taking photos! =)

As easy as it seems, the manual is in Mandarin and if there is a need, we will do up a translation for everyone. It is our job, our duty to bring everyone into film camera haha!

Solely by following the pictures (without the words), you can assemble the camera frame easily and I assure you, this is much much much easier than the TLR!!! There's only one spring and there isn't any room for you to go wrong. This camera will take you less than half of the time u spent fixing the TLR..

Next up, we will be able to see a nicely assembled frame in like.. less than 20 minutes? it will look something like this..

So far so good, this isn't anything challenging up to this point. The only difficulty i faced while assembling this camera is the size of the lens cap. It is so 'fitting' that it can barely rest over the pinhole, if you are carrying it out for photog outing or even simply putting it in your bag, chances are the lens cap will drop! so you have to really use your brute strength to try to push it in and make sure that it stay and won't drop off! My thumb got slightly swollen after a few attempts =(

but trust me, the satisfaction level of assembling this camera is nothing less than that of a pinhole camera =)) especially when you realize that you can view 3D photo with this simple yet innovative 3D viewer!

AMAZING EH! How else awesome can it get to take photos with 3D effects on a film camera?! The camera comes with a 3D photo viewer, instead of wearing 3D glasses to view the photo, you actually look at the photos through the photo viewer.

And it can take panorama photos too! Which means it can photos like the one below..

This is totally possible with this camera without any touching up from photoshop, all we need is a tripod and position it and let it run on bulb mode for a while will do =)) I’ll try it out when I am free, probably at marina bay, any other nice suggestion?

Spinner 360°

"OMG! YOU BOUGHT IT?!" was my first reaction when my brother, a photography and lomography fanatic, brought home this bulky looking camera. It is super expensive (SGD200?). And he bought it!

When I brought to school to "show off" and play around, my friends were fascinated when I said it will turn 360° when I take a shot. So during break time, we went to some field behind our school building, stood in a circle, and waited for me to pull the cord.

"Smile, everyone. Ready?"
"Yupp, ok."
Buzzzz
... ...
"That's it?" (everyone was frozen there with their smiles.)
"Eh, I think so."

And we let out bursts of laughters. haha!!! It's damn funny as it's my first time using it, and we all didn't feel secure, as we felt that our photos are not captured.
In the end, the photos turn out to be GOOD!

Spinner 360° is really expensive. The camera itself is expensive. You can only take 7 or 8 shots out of a roll of 36 exposures. (very lugi hor.) Developing sprocket holes will burn a hole in my pocket as well. -.-

But it's damn COOL! WIth Spinner 360°, we don't have to try to squeeze our heads together in front of the camera lens, and hope our faces will be taken, or hope that we are not blocked. Everyone just needs to stand in a circle, and smile! =) A group photo is taken! Spinner 360° works super well for groups shots! Scenery shots are great too!

Holga 120

I think I might have trouble blogging about 30 toy cameras! So I have decided to split the Holga Family into many posts. haha. I know I have blogged about Holga 135BC and Holga 120N before... But can I please cheat a little for this 30-day challenge?! haha.

When I was thinking of getting a Holga for myself, I was torn between 120N and 135BC. Right now, I am proud to be an owner of Holga120N!

Why did I decide to get a 120N instead of a 135BC? I was attracted by the modifications which I can do with 120N. And I can have sprocket holes by using 35mm film without the 35mm adaptor back. I will get to the details later. Let me first explain how to use a 120mm film and a 35mm film in a Holga120N.

Using 120mm film
Holga120 is created to use 120mm film. It is longer than a 35mm film and only has 12 exposures. There're two film size masks for Holga - 6cm x 6cm square and 6cm x 4.5cm rectangle for you to choose. Film advancement is easy if you are using 120mm film, just need to turn the film advancement knob until you see the number showing at the Holga back.

Using 35mm film
If you are using a 35mm film on a Holga 120, you will need a 35mm adapter. Also, you will have to advance the film by manually counting the number of clicks/turns. Here is a table of number of clicks provided exclusively by The Film Age.

The little space is for you to write down some notes of the shots you took. Get a pencil, and ticktick after you shoot, so that you can keep track how many clicks to turn next.

Do you realise that the number of clicks get smaller and smaller? Imagine now you load a roll of film.

On the left side, there are more films. But as you advance the roll, more film will get onto the right side. Right? Hence, the diameter of film on the right gets bigger, and it will require lesser turns to advance the rest of the film.
Don't get it? It's ok. It's just for fun! =))

If you are using 35mm film on Holga 120 WITHOUT a 35mm adapter, you will have... SPROCKET HOLES! Yea!

Tomy ToLNe

These cute squarish toy cameras, Tomy ToLNe is manufactured the famous Takara Tomy Japan since 2007. It stopped selling for a while, and now... TADA they are back!!!

Although available in 4 colours (blue, green, pink and black), I am attracted by the outstanding colours! I personally feel that they are nice shades of blue, green and pink. haha.

Each package comes with 3 very fun filters - fog, sepia and split frame. And... heh heh heh, it has SPROKET HOLES features!

Holga 135TIM

Holga 135TIM - the Sm:)ely camera.

What does TIM stand for?
It stands for Twin Image Maker.

Alot people mistake Holga 135TIM as a half frame camera, just like Diana Mini or Golden Half. But no, it is not a half frame camera. Its functions are much more interesting... or should I say, complicated?

I don't own a Holga 135TIM (yet). However, this is what I have found out online.

Each "eye" operates as a lens. You can open and close the "eyes" to use both together or individually.
You can play around with Holga 135TIM by:
(a) Using two lenses seperately to take completely independent pictures.
(b) Using two lenses together to take two basically identical pictures at the same time; and
(c) Using two lenses together to take 3D pictures of objects at a close distance (less than 3m).

Opening both "eyes", and snap a shot, is very easy. Just press the shutter, and turn the film advance gear.

Using one "eye" individually is tricker. Open the left "eye", close the right "eye", snap the photo. DO NOT TURN THE FILM ADVANCE KNOB. Now, open the right "eye", close the left "eye", snap the photo. OK, NOW TURN THE FILM ADVANCE KNOB. haha.

So, you need to remember opening and closing which eyes, snapping, and turning the knob. Quite challenging, I feel.

No matter what, Holga 135TIM never fails to bring a SM:)E on my face.

What does TLR stand for?
TLR stands for Twins Lens Reflex. Simple.

Yes yes, it is similar to the DIY Recesky TLR, Blackbird Fly TLR and Gakkenflex TLR. The kinda look-down-and-shoot-camera. Cool, huh? It's maybe good for people who are lazy to squat or bend over to take photos.

Holga produces 3 types of TLR - Holga 120TLR, Holga 120GTLR, Holga 135TLR and Holga 135BC TLR. As most of you should know, "G" stands for glass lens. So the difference between 120TLR and 120GTLR is that, the former has plastic lens, while the latter has glass lens. I have no idea why is this called a Blackbird, Fly. It is none other than another TLR, i.e. twin lens reflex camera. But, I must admit, I was attracted to its name.
Taken off from Blackbirdflycamera.com, BBF is unique for 6 reasons:

1) It’s a successor to a classic! It seems the Blackbird, Fly is considered the Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) version of the classic Holga, which is in turn a successor to the Diana, both of which have a real cult following. Some ca
ll the Holga a “toy” camera, which is of course a bit of a misnomer. Many have relied on it to take beautiful photographs. Yet the Holga is also known for its unpredictability, as every one is just a little different. Most have light leaks, and those leaks are not going to be the same between any two Holgas. This unpredictability contributes to much of their charm, and was taken to the extreme by some photographers as it became a popular camera for “shooting from the hip”. Many Holga mods have also become very popular.

2) It’s a TLR! The Blackbird, Fly, is a Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) camera, meaning that there are two objective lenses: One for taking the photograph, and one for the waist-level viewfinder. Behind the viewfinder lens is a mirror at a 45-degree angle (hence the term “reflex”), which reflects upwards through a matter focusing screen surrounded by a hood/enclosure used to block some light and reduce reflection on the screen. This creates an image on the screen identical to what will be captured on film through the photographic lens.

3) It uses 35mm film! Most TLR cameras use 120 format film. Although 120 film is very cool, it can be much harder to find and even harder to get developed. With 35mm film you can just drop it off at the nearest 1-hour photo!

4) 3 formats! You can shoot in 3 formats (using provided masks): normal 35mm (24mm x 36mm), square format (24mm x 24mm), and large square format (36mm x 36mm).

5) It’s VERY reasonable! Many TLRs are hundreds of dollars, and although some of them are worth it, the Blackbird, Fly is just $119. It’s an amazing TLR for hobbyists to creative professionals to everyone in between.

6) Colors, colors, colors! Seriously, how many cameras have multiple color options?

I must agree to the last point. I totally love the vibrant colours!

Gakkenflex

Presenting to you... (another TLR)... GAKKENFLEX!

Gakkenflex is a DIY twin lens reflex camera, which comes in a package with a Japanese magazine, issue #25 Otona no Kagaku. In front of the camera, the name "Gakkenflex" is imprinted there. The instructions manual is in Japanese, but not to worry, the drawings are pretty much idiot proof. There are also useful links online which you can refer to when in doubt. My brother who cannot read Japanese, built the camera in about 3 hours. So I believe it is relatively easy.

When using the camera, please do not, I repeat, DO NOT be like my brother, who snap a shot, and continue to snap another one, without turning the film advance knob at the side. He happily snapped about 40 plus shots shots, and then realised he didn't advance the film because he didn't know how. There is no film counter. You see the knobs at the side? One is for rewinding of film, the other is for film advancement. Turn half a round whenever you finish one photo.

Gakkenflex does not produce sproket holes, neither does it have a hotshoe for flash. It doesnt have any bulb mode either. That's the disadvantage of Gakkenflex. BUT, it is still very cool to be holding this TLR camera, don't you think so? It has a TRUE viewfinder, that is, what you see is what you are snapping! Unlike other toy cameras, where the viewfinder is different from what you are snapping.

Shape masks for Holga 120

Not satisfied with the sprockets mod we introduced earlier on? (You must be kidding me! How can that be?!) Here's another one to satisfy your craving for more modifications!

You will need:

Holga 120
Paper (White card or cardboard)
Pen-knife (Scissors)
Scotch-tape
Ruler
Pen

Steps:

Measure and cut out a 3.1cm by 3.1 cm square from your paper/whitecard/cardboard.
Draw diagonals to fins a centre point.
Use the point as a reference point, and draw the shapes you desire.

Stick the piece of square into your Holga.

Cover the back and start snapping away!

Tips:

You can test out if this is the shape you want, and if it is in the centre. Set Holga to "B" mode, use a piece of tissue paper, cover over it, (without the cover back ok!!). Lens facing any light source, (e.g. ceiling lightbubls, sunshine), and press the shutter and hold it there. You can see the shape of the light and that will be what your photo will be like.

Please do not cut the shape too big a size, else there won't be any effects.
Not neccessary a circle! You can have heart shape, star shape, any shapes! Try them out today!

Steps:

Using a pen-knife, cut the sponge into 2.9cm by 1.3cm (length by breadth).
If you are using the 120 cover back, use the black duct tapes to tape the "red windows" of the cover back (both inside and outside to ensure no light will leak into the camera).
There's no need to tape anything if you are using the 135 film adapter cover back.
At the slot where you place the 35mm film, use sponge to secure the position of the film.
Slot the tongue of film into the takeup spool. (You can use a duct tape to try to secure it.)
Make sure the film is leveled and at the centre... Cover the back... and TADA! It's ready to shoot some sprockets!

Films that we know Part 1

Ever wonder what film to use for your Holga or your toy camera? Worried that the photo that you take with a particular film might get overexposed or underexposed?

I've been through your worries and today at The Film Age I will share with everyone my experiences on films. The study on films cannot be explained in one post, so let us focus on learning the basic differences of films today.

The most common films that we see nowadays in the market are:

Instant film
Print film
Colour reversal film
Black & White film

Instant film is used for instant photographic camera, or more familiarly known as Polaroid. Instant film does not require any chemical or a dark room, it automates and integrates development immediately after the exposure. Leave the technical stuffs aside, if you want to know whether it is an instant film, just refer to the packaging, it would be really clear to tell if it is for instant camera, and most of the time the films are rectangular, as shown below.

Print Film, also commonly recognized as negative film, is the most common film used in the world. This type of film is the cheapest film you can find, and also the easiest to develop. You can easily find a store to help you develop negative film in Singapore, market price now is around 6-9 dollars for developing. For beginners or lomo-lovers-on-budget, you are highly recommended to use print film. Packaging of print film and colour reversal film are almost the same, how do you know if it is a print film? The easiest way of course is by looking at the price, print film normally should not cost more than 6 dollars per roll, where as colour reversal film is 9-10 dollars. Another way to confirm is by checking the box, print film has a label of C-41, which means it uses C-41 chemical to develop the film.

Colour reversal film, also called slide film, is a higher grade film that can be viewed directly from a projector. It is very expensive to develop colour reversal film using E-6 chemical, and it is also quite difficult to find outlets that helps to develop slide film as it is less popular and it is harder to print photos from slide film. It is considered a professional film. However, we the lomo lovers don't really bother about the sharpness of the image, what we love is the vintage & plastic lens effects!! When we use slide film, most of the time we will cross-process it using C-41 instead of E-6, the colour will be different (greater colour contrast) from a normal image, and that is what exactly we want!!!! And because of cross-process, sometimes the effect of the photo is much nicer than a sharp image and it really gives you a very artistic feel ((: How do you recognise slide film? Exactly the same as the above, just look for E-6 instead of C-41, we recognise the film type by looking at the chemical.

Black & white reversal film, self-explanatory enough. It is a B&W film and it is not that common anymore nowadays, where as for developing, the chemical is made up of a mixture of compounds that serve different purposes. Photographic courses usually teach people to develop B&W film in dark room because they can mix the chemical from scratch. The process is quite different from developing a negative or slide film, hence it is harder to find outlets that provide this service. However, we do see some Kodak B&W film, for example, Kodak BW400CN (BW -black and white, 400 -ISO, CN -colour negative) is a B&W colour negative, hence it is just a negative film that produces black and white photo and it uses C-41 process. It is not a orginal B&W film like Ilford film. For beginners that wanna try our B&W photography, I strongly recommend you to try out with a negative B&W film before you go for professional B&W film because it is much cheaper and easier to develop. For B&W film, just look at the packaging and if it uses C-41, it is a negative film that works like a B&W film (:

Teeny-weeny Mini-mo! Diana Mini

Blooger deprived me from posting photos fore two days... so i couldnt post any entries. Oh well, the problem is solved now. So let us resume our blogging for toy cameras!!! =))
For this article on Diana Mini, The Film Age invited Ms Tan Wei Ling (a.k.a Da Jie) to write for us. Here you go, a wonderful and interesting piece of article on Diana Mini.

Diana mini:

This diana camera is actually a gift (from them above). SHE is pretty. I’m not referring to tat 2 ladies above, of course. I’m referring to my diana. haa… She is small and easy to carry around. Deeply in love with her.
My first roll of film was a disaster. I kept forgetting to set cloudy/sunny OR N/B at a different day. As well as the distance…
There are 2 film formats which are square frame and half frame.
Here are the few of nice nice sample images that I have taken:
Used kodak film. ISO 400.

These are all the square frame pictures.
I wanted to try taking by half-frame. But i could not push it to half-frame. Hard to push which i dare not to. I scared it might spoilt..

Then till the day i met Rose….

She said why not try to take first then push it to half frame (instead of turning the wheel yet). BINGO!

Saw the ~~cheaper~~ flash which cost $95 instead of $106. Abt the fisheye len, dun know leh..

The Film Age: Sounds like Da Jie reallu had fun with Diana Mini, and the lesson learnt here is: Take a shot, change to square/rectangle frame before turning the film advance knob. Continue to take more photo with Diana Mini, I'm sure your photos will get better and better! =))

Diana and its clones

Diana was born even earlier than Holga, in the 1960s. It first appeared in Hong Kong (same as Holga), and was manufactured by Great Wall Plastic Factory. Similar to Holga in many ways, Diana:
1. is a plastic camera box.
2. has plastic lens.
3. uses 120mm film.
4. creates light leaks. (In fact, it is leakier than Holga.)
5. creates vignetting effects.

Diana shoots 16 4cm x 4cm shots per roll of 120mm film. It has 3 apertures, for cloudy, partly cloudy and sunny. They are f/11, f/13 and f/19 respectively. Shuter speed ranges from 1/200th to 1/30th of a second.
Great Wall Plastic Factory produced alot of clones of Diana. They all look alike to Diana but have different names such as, Anny and Acme.

The revival of Diana was with the creation of Diana+ in 2007 by Lomography. It has now pinhole and panorama features added to the original charms of Diana.
Subsequenty, Diana F+ (with flash unit), Diana Mini (half frame) are all born.

Remember in the previous previous previous entry (rewind: http://twl06.wordpress.com/2011/01/27/when-i-pick-up-the-camera-you-know-its-never-ending/), i said i wish to own a Recesky as i wanna shoot photo by looking down at the camera… and u know wat? I damn slow man.. I wanna have it without knowing wat is DIY. -_- DIY stands for DO IT YOURSELF!! *aish* *whack my head*
Honestly speaking, i was doubt at first. Make and then shoot? It’s really unbelievable. Like….. how can it be? where got such thing one?

The box said “Assemble in 1 hour”. This is for the smartest people who can finish it in 1 hr time lor. As for me, i took 5 hrs in total for 2 days!!! This is called smart people… at least i finally made it mah.

Such a tiny tiny spring made me fed up, you know. Wanted to show you pic here but i was too focusing on building it. So, no pic.

My best friend was also keen in building. So i let her build when i was “fed up”. lol.. Morever, my neck numb when facing down while building it. She was such a great help. When she and i confused, we go and irritated Rommel from the-film-age blog. U know wat? With ugly iphone, it’s more convenience. Using ‘wat’s apps’ application, can take photo and send send send to assure that we did it correctly.

Like wat he said, tat shutter part is very important. Else, you cry and think your film will be wasted?? if i’m not wrong. Can’t remember. *pei seh*

Right now, i’m finding a nice strap for my recesky. =)

Holga-ga-ga 120N

When I was thinking of getting a Holga for myself, I was torn between 120N and 135BC. Right now, I am proud to be an owner of Holga120N!

Why did I decide to get a 120N instead of a 135BC? I was attracted by the modifications which I can do with 120N. And I can have sprocket holes by using 35mm film without the 35mm adaptor back. I will get to the details later. Let me first explain how to use a 120mm film and a 35mm film in a Holga120N.

Using 120mm film
Holga120 is created to use 120mm film. It is longer than a 35mm film and only has 12 exposures. There're two film size masks for Holga - 6cm x 6cm square and 6cm x 4.5cm rectangle for you to choose. Film advancement is easy if you are using 120mm film, just need to turn the film advancement knob until you see the number showing at the Holga back.

Using 35mm film
If you are using a 35mm film on a Holga 120, you will need a 35mm adapter. Also, you will have to advance the film by manually counting the number of clicks/turns. Here is a table of number of clicks provided exclusively by The Film Age.

The little space is for you to write down some notes of the shots you took. Get a pencil, and ticktick after you shoot, so that you can keep track how many clicks to turn next.

Do you realise that the number of clicks get smaller and smaller? Imagine now you load a roll of film.

On the left side, there are more films. But as you advance the roll, more film will get onto the right side. Right? Hence, the diameter of film on the right gets bigger, and it will require lesser turns to advance the rest of the film.
Don't get it? It's ok. It's just for fun! =))

If you are using 35mm film on Holga 120 WITHOUT a 35mm adapter, you will have... SPROCKET HOLES! Yea!

Interestingly Holga135BC

Since The Film Age is selling Holga135BC, let's talk about 135BC first. (We will talk about 120N in the next post.)

What does the BC stand for? Some websites say "Black Corners", some say "Bent Corners". No matter isit "black" or "bent", it means the same thing - 135BC has some vignetting effect which a standard 135 doesn't have.

Holga135BC uses 35mm films which we see in those Kodak shops or photo stores. Also, loading film into 135BC is much easier than that into 120N. Since there are 36 exposures in a roll of 35mm film, Holga135 users can have the luxury of taking more shots than those of Holga120N which only allows 12 exposures. In summary, the advantages in using Holga135BC are:

1. You still get to have the vignetting effects which a standard Holga120N has.
2. 35mm films are everywhere, so it is convenient to buy and develop photos.
3. Loading film into the camera is easy.
4. You get to take 36 exposures. More shots, more fun!

However, there are still Holga lovers who feel that using the traditional 120N is what makes Holga special. In the next post, we will talk about Holga120N. So stay tune!

Recesky TLR - troubleshooting

On 8th March, I met up with my friend, Aloy, to fix the TLR that he bought from us, we spent around 1 hour fixing it and thank god it was fixable.

For all the Recesky TLR buyers out there, this is a warning to you! when you are assembling the shutter leaf, please please be reminded to not screw too hard, you don't have to screw it all the way. Aloy did and he broke the pivot for the shutter leaf.. even after i remove the screw, the shutter leaf doesn't spring back to cover the hole after I pulled to the side.. it is suppose to be very flexible (shutter speed of 1/125 i guess?) but instead it looked just like an infinite bulb mode.

I removed the shutter leaf and I saw a deep crack on the pivot and it split opened, therefore it became thicker. This eventually tighten the gap between the pivot and the shutter leaf and rendering the shutter leaf not flexible anymore even with the help of the spring.

What I did was no magic, I used brute force to push the pivot against itself hoping to close up the gap of the crack and surprisingly it worked!!! I managed to put the shutter leaf back in place again and it works perfectly fine! However, I cant place the screw back into place because of the crack, the screw just doesn't fit in anymore. But oh wells, it still works and the shutter leaf doesn't fall out even when i shake it, which I think the crack somehow helped to stabalize the shutter leaf in place.

Phew, please be very cautious while fixing the shutter leaf, if you have any question, please email us yea? I might not be able to answer you on tweeter because I am a tweeter noob (quote from Gladys)

Here is a photo of the shutter leaf after I fixed it. The red arrow points at the fault and the crack is visible, just right below the arrow tip. That's one good crack eh? it held the shutter leaf in place without a screw.

When I first researched on toy cameras, Holga caught my attention. It seems to be just a black plastic big box, doesn't seem like it can be used to take photos. The more I reasearched, the more fasinated I got. There're so many different kinds of Holga! There're so much I can do with Holga! So, don't judge the book by its cover. Holga may seem like just a black plastic box, unattractive and dull. But hey! No no. Let us tell you how interesting Holga can be!
Holga is the common medium format 120mm film camera, first appeared in Hong Kong in 1982. A very interesting fact about Holga, I feel, is its name; it was originated from the Cantonese term "hol-gon", which means "very bright". Holga has two formats - 6cm x 6cm (square) or 6cm x 4.5cm (rectangles). There are two modes on Holga which you can choose - "N" normal mode or the "B" bulb mode. Use the "N" mode for usual shootings. "B" mode is used when you want to create long exposure. For example,

is acheived using "B" mode. Remember, place your Holga on tripod or on a table to prevent blurry images. If you can to acheive otherwise, just shake your Holga crazily on "B" mode! =))

Holga is much loved for its very distinctive vignetted images, which means that the four corners of the photograph is black. Any standard Holga 120 will have this vignetted effects. However, a standard Holga 135 will not have such characteristic. Hence, Holga 135BC is created with a built-in transparent mask which creates this much loved effect of Holga.
Ever since the first Holga, there are many versions of Holga till date. Here are some model numbers which you have to know:

120S - the original Holga since discontinued.
WOCA - 120S with Japanese-supplied glass lens since discontinued.
120N - updated version with additional 6cm x 6cm film mask.
120SF - a standard 120S with in-built flash.
120FN - a standard 120N with in-built flash.
120CFN - a standard 120N with in-built colour flash.
120GN - a standard 120N with glass lens.
120GFN - a 120NFN with glass lens and in-built flash.
120GCFN - a 120FN with colour flash and glass lens.
120TLR - a 120CFN with a twin-lens reflex viewfinder.
120GTLR - a 120TLR with glass lens.
120PC - a pinhole version of 120N.
120WPC - a wide pinhole version of 120N.
135 - a standard Holga with 35mm film.
135BC - a Holga135 with "black corners" vignetting effects
135PC - a pinhole version of 135BC.
135TLR - a Holga 35mm twin-lens reflex.
Micro 110 - standard 26mm 110 Holga.

All Holgas, regardless of its model number, have the same basics. Its shutter speed is 1/100 of a second; aperture is betweem f/11 and f/13. The focus setting ranges from four feet to infinity.

The DIY Recesky TLR

My first DIY camera!

I was as excited as all of you when I saw the box! omg that's probably one of the most amazing moment of my photography experience, the feeling was 85% excitement, 10% surprised and 5% doubt. you will know what I mean when you see it for yourself, I just can't believe you can actually assemble the shutter leaf yourself, the mechanism just doesn't seem that easy to me..

ok these are the camera parts.. comes together with an English manual.

My sister spent 10 minutes admiring the box and finally exclaimed: "you sure you can take photo with this thing?"we'll see and I will keep everyone posted yea? :D
This is the manual.. indeed a picture speaks a thousand words. I honestly didn't pay much attention to the wording at all haha!

This is (my leg) and the first piece i assembled..

As all the parts were slowly fitting into its own rightful place...

I started to feel like a pro when it looked more and more mechanical.

This is the shutter leaf... the toughest part of all I must say... because firstly my fingers aren't small enough to fix it, and I had a hard time understanding the diagram and the English!

And ta-da!!!! its finally taking some nice shape~ AND ITS DONE!!

Some terminologies which are useful to know

Lomo - Basically, we used as a short form for Lomography. But LOMO (ЛОМО) is manufacturer of advanced optical instruments, medical equipment, consumer still and movie cameras, projectors, lenses, film editors, splicers, professional sound recorders for motion-picture production based in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Toy cameras - Plastic cameras which look like a toy, but not a toy. Holga, Diana, Fisheye, Action Sampler all are examples of toy cameras.

ISO - Denotes the sensitivity of image sensor to the amount of light present. The higher the ISO, the higher the sensitivity level, and thus higher possibility to take photos in low-light conditions.

Shutter speed - Measures the effective length a camera's shutter is open. A Holga's shutter speed is approximately 1/1000th of a second.

Medium format - Normally a professional medium format camera cost more than USD 10,000. But for us, we can do that with Holga and Diana and its about 200 times cheaper!! Medium format film has no sprocket holes like 135mm film, the size of the photo on the film is larger than those on 135mm film.

Cross-processing (Xpro) - A procedure of deliberately processing photographic films with chemicals which are not intended for its type of film. The end result of such process is unnatural colours and high contrast. Cross-processing slide film is the most common. Please note that in Singapore, not all photo stores can do Xpro.

Multiple exposure - Two or more individual exposures are made to create a single photograph.

Photography. We all know what isit about.

How about Lomography? I have been asking around my friends, and most of them will go, "Huh? What's that?" whenever I mention Lomography.

Wiki "Lomography" and you will find that, Lomography is a casual way of photography. Over-saturated colours, off-focus images and even light-streaks or scratches on the photos are the characteristics of Lomography. The name is inspired by a former state-run optics manufacturer LOMO PLC of Saint Petersburg, Russia. The product 35mm LOMO LC-A Compact Automat camera created by LOMO PLC was the centre of attraction in Lomography's marketing and sales activities.

Every Lomographer must know The Ten Golden Rules:

1. Take your camera everywhere you go.
2. Use it anytime - day and night.
3. Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it.
4. Try the shot from the hip.
5. Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible.
6. Don't think. (William Firebrace)
7. Be fast.
8. You don't have to know beforehand what you captured on film.
9. Afterwards either.
10. Don't worry about any rules.

The essence of these rules is simply: DON'T THINK, JUST SHOOT.
